When visitors walk through the beautiful Nanhu Parkand view stunning scenery while enjoying the fresh air, few people in Tangshan would imagine its dark past.

The site of the 2016 World Horticultural Exposition, Nanhu Lake Park, was once a coal mine. On July 28, 1976, Tangshan was struck by an earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale. The deadly earthquake leveled Tangshan in just 23 seconds, causing the coal mine to collapsewith 96 percent of the city's buildingsdestroyed. The area that sank gradually filled with water and household waste.

In 1996, Tangshan started to rehabilitate the devastatedarea and turned it into a park, eventually making it an attractive tourist spotfollowinga 20-year effort.

The current Nanhu Park covers an area of 27.5 square kilometers, including11.5 square kilometers covered by water. Various categories of plants and trees, multiple typesof flowers, and convenient service facilities in Nanhu Park attract large numbersof visitors.
